11. Derailment response gets high marks

A column of smoke rose into the sky as firefighters raced to the scene of the train derailment. The earth heaved as an explosion rattled residents and pushed windowpanes from their frames. At least one tank car was on fire — no one was sure what else.

  13. Civilization has no place for drones

In his recent speech, President Barack Obama set forth what he described as narrow, reasonable guidelines for using drones to carry out targeted killings overseas. The U.S., he said, will only use drone strikes "against terrorists who pose a continuing and imminent threat to the American people." Moreover, the U.S. will only act when other governments are unwilling or unable to stop terrorists in their territories and we do not have the ability to capture them.

  17. Iran outmaneuvers U.S. in the Syrian proxy war

Syria's uprising offered the possibility of a strategic defeat of Iran. In this scenario, Iran would be weakened by the collapse of President Bashar Assad's regime, Tehran's single Arab ally and a vital link to Lebanon's Hezbollah militia. Isolated, Iran would become more vulnerable to international pressure to limit its nuclear program. And as Iran's regional influence faded, those of its rivals — U.S. allies Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia — would expand.

Government leaders are asking us to out-innovate, out-export and out-work our competitors in order for the United States to turn this economy around. But what if our own government was instituting policies that proved to be some of the biggest obstacles in achieving those goals?
