1. In Texas schools, failing grade for Bible courses

Guest Columnist
Fifty years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down as unconstitutional the devotional use of the Bible by public schools, in its ruling on Abington Township v. Schempp. But many school districts in the Lone Star State still haven’t gotten the...

3. GUEST COLUMN: Kentucky's new test leaves many questions unanswered

Contributing Writer
Grand Canyon-esque gaps in math scores. Praise for poorly performing schools. Failed top-down policies. So far, the developing story being told by the initial batch of results from Kentucky’s new testing system suggests that our public education...

5. Making a list and fact-checking it twice

Contributing columnist
While Santa’s busy checking his list, I’m inspecting claims that spending sleigh-fuls of money on government preschool programs would result in long-term improvement for Kentucky’s children. During his recent inaugural speech, Gov....

Although far too few Kentucky 2011 high school graduates were ready for college, our students did improve their performance on this year’s 36-point ACT college entrance test — going from an overall composite score of 19.4 in 2010 to 19.6 this year.

CORAL SPRINGS Build a new City Hall — and make it an attraction for a new downtown.

17. What did Alonso accomplish? Not much

As a teacher, I totally agree with Morna McDermott's assessments of city school CEO Andrés Alonso's performance ("The fallacy of reform," May 18) over the past six years. She speaks the truth. Mr. Alonso has proven to be a fine salesman. Surely, the school board, mayor and state think so. They have practically given him carte blanche.

19. Special events boost charter schools

For the city-run charter schools in Pembroke Pines, raising money to keep them running is an uphill battle. The charter schools don't have access to the same tax money that funds Broward County Public Schools, so they turn to alternative sources of...

23. Alonso isn't getting his due

Saturday's "your turn" pieces on education reform ("The fallacy of reform" and "Diversity, choice key for schools," May 18) did not seem to address Baltimore City schools' educational history nor requirements in a practical, yet considerate way.
