1. A 'Place Beyond the Pines' where two actors shine ★★★ 1/2

In director Derek Cianfrance's previous feature, "Blue Valentine," pretension found itself in a stern deadlock with dramatic honesty. Thanks to the performance of Michelle Williams, opposite the flashier, more contrived flourishes of Ryan Gosling, the results were worth seeing.

  3. Ryan Gosling in 'The Place Beyond the Pines': The eyes have it

Ryan Gosling, currently starring opposite his real-life love Eva Mendes in the darkly wrought drama of "The Place Beyond the Pines," is always chemically combustible on screen. That romantic power crystallized early on in 2004's "The Notebook." His rain-soaked embrace of co-star Rachel McAdams, also an off-screen love for a time, made him into an overnight heartthrob.

  11. Like/dislike: Mates of State

Since the late '90s, Mates of State have been a staple of the indie rock world. The husband-and-wife duo consists of Jason Hammel and Kori Gardner, who combine keyboard, drums and vocals to create energetic harmonies. Over the past 14 years, the Lawrence, Kan. natives have released seven albums and played with bands such as Jimmy Eat World and Death Cab for Cutie. On Tuesday their travels will take them to The Ottobar, where they will perform songs from their most recent album "Mountaintops." Here Kori gives us her take on high-waisted pants (a no-go), the Beiber movie (she cried) and more.

  15. Oscar oversights include some Hollywood heavyweights

In writer-director Christopher Nolan's sci-fi thriller "Inception," Leonardo DiCaprio portrays a dream-time cat burglar who smuggles ideas in and out of people's minds. But on Tuesday, many Oscar prognosticators felt that "Inception" itself had gotten hijacked — with Nolan passed over for a widely expected best director nomination even as the movie found itself in the best picture category.

  17. Sundance 2011: The six biggest stories of this year's festival

As the last publicists, filmmakers and reporters made their way out of Park City, Utah, on Sunday and turned the land back over to its rightful owners (snowboarders and ski bums), we decided to take a look back at the 11 days just passed at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Six storylines had risen to the top. (Well, a few others did too, but six has a nice ring to it.) Here they are, in no particular order:
