  7. Edward Burns returns to his roots

    About halfway through writing the script for "The Fitzgerald Family Christmas" (which opens at the Wilmette Theatre next week), Edward Burns says he found himself at a crossroad. "Do I want to make the big, crazy, funny, holly-jolly Christmas Irish family movie?" he recalled when we spoke last week, "or do I want to go for something a little more grounded in the real world and a little more serious?"

  9. David Chase: coming-of-age stories never get old

    David Chase's new movie, "Not Fade Away," his first major work since concluding "The Sopranos," tells the story of a thoughtful teenage boy (John Magaro) growing up in New Jersey during the 1960s. Flat December light settles over the film's suburban snowbanks in winter, mountains of leaves clog the gutters in autumn, the Jersey shore beckons in summer. The teen plays in a garage band with an outside chance at fame; he meets a girl who understands him; he runs afoul of his father (James Gandolfini), revealing a generational divide; he discovers the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and, at the movies, Antonioni. "What kind of movie is this?" the boy asks his girlfriend as they slump before "Blow-Up," simultaneously mystified and rocked to the core.<em> "What kind of movie is this?"</em>

  17. Film review: A win for the 'Dark Horse'

    It may be too obvious an intro, but filmmaker Todd Solondz &mdash; whose new film &ldquo;Dark Horse&rdquo; opens next week &mdash; could himself be considered a dark horse. His films have a strong following at festivals and in art houses, but they are too honest, too dark, and too bitterly funny to fit any major studio's notion of &ldquo;commercial.&rdquo;

  21. The Writefast Club

    The conversation segued from book to book, ranging from Elizabeth Strout's &ldquo;Olive Kitteridge&rdquo; to the works of Philip Roth, over coffee in the Palmer House caf&eacute;. Molly Ringwald had come to Chicago late this spring to support 826CHI, a non-profit tutoring center, as part of its &ldquo;People Eating &amp; Giving&rdquo; dinner. There she read part of her forthcoming book, &ldquo;When It Happens to You,&rdquo; a set of interlinked stories about modern life and relationships. Ringwald is known for her roles in John Hughes' movies such as &ldquo;The Breakfast Club&rdquo; and &ldquo;Pretty in Pink.&rdquo; But the former teen star is now a mother of three, including 3-year-old twins and 8-year-old Mathilda, and she is married to Panio Gianopoulos, a former editor at a New York publishing house who now writes fiction himself.

  23. Molly Ringwald taps into 'When It Happens to You'

    Picture a film shoot somewhere in Canada. On one side of a swimming pool, the gear, the crew and most of the cast; on the other side, Molly Ringwald. They're shooting the rest of the scene before her part, so she sits on a box to wait. She begins tapping on her phone, and as the hours pass, that's all she does: Sit on the box, tapping. By the time the camera turns her way, she has finished the first draft of "When It Happens to You," the impassioned, clever title story of her first book of fiction, which hits shelves Tuesday.
