  8. Hiking at Lake Eaton Sinkhole, Ocala National Forest

    So Florida hiking is flat and dull? Then you haven't hiked <a id="tinymce" dir="ltr" href="http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/ocala/recarea/?recid=40298" target="_blank">Lake Eaton Sinkhole Trail</a> in <a href="http://www.fs.usda.gov/ocala" target="_blank">Ocala National Forest</a>. The sinkhole, 450 feet wide and 80 feet deep, is dry at the bottom, but the vegetation changes from sandy scrub to lush with trees that like a moister environment, such as pignut hickory. It's 119 steps to the bottom. The sinkhole's outer-loop trail is 1.8 miles, while a trail directly from the parking lot to the sinkhole is 0.4 mile. Across the parking lot is Lake Eaton Trail, a 2.3-mile loop to an idyllic lake with three observation boardwalks. The middle one is best. <a href="http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5199097.pdf" target="_blank">Click here for a trail map</a>. That's my friend Ben descending in the attached video. And if you like Lake Eaton Sinkhole, the 120-foot-deep <a href="http://www.floridastateparks.org/devilsmillhopper/" target="_blank">Devil's Millhopper </a>in Gainesville is spectacular. Walk 212 steps down to see water from the surface aquifer pouring out of the fern-covered sides into a hole at the bottom leading to the Floridan Aquifer. <a href="http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/ocala/recarea/?recid=40298" target="_blank">Click here for detailed directions to Lake Eaton Sinkhole Trail</a>. And bring insect repellent!
