  1. 'Listen' to your dog's body language

Dogs (and cats) can’t talk and tell us when they are sick or hurting. It would be nice if they could, wouldn’t it? My dog started exhibiting distress signals — ears pulled back, head lowered, back with a slight hump instead of a straight line, tail down to the ground. She also was panting and licking her nose a lot. All these are signs of stress and possibly pain. However, I noticed that all these signs were seen only when she was in the back of the house, if you opened the door to the front of the house, she was dancing on her tiptoes, bouncing around and wanting to play. Big mystery! After a visit to the veterinarian to make sure there wasn’t a physical problem, we figured that she had been traumatized by some men who were working on the roof. Guess she had never seen or heard strangers on the roof before. (She’ll have to resolve this in a hurry, because reindeer also make noise on the roof and you know how little time is left before Dec. 24.)

  3. May 2012 be the best chapter in the book of you

I am actually looking forward to a new year and the wonderment of it all. I am glad I didn’t know what last year held in store for me because I would have been wanting to hold on a little longer to the year. Six of my relatives passed away last year. That can reduce a family quickly.

The notion of a loved one ending their life at their own hand is one that most of us will never be able to comprehend. However, here in Jessamine County, as well as the rest of the state, and for that matter the country, suicide has become more commonplace than ever before.
