  5. Catholic bishops won't take 'mostly yes' for an answer

In journalism, a “standing hed” is a headline that can be used over and over because the event it describes is recurring. My favorite standing hed is “Pope Prays for Peace,” but the New York Times this week had one that is becoming equally familiar: “Bishops Reject Birth Control Compromise.”

  7. Letters: Birth control for men

Re "New plan for birth-control coverage," Feb. 2 If men want to make it difficult for women to prevent pregnancy, it's only fair that they make it difficult for men to cause it. One could hope the men of Roman Catholic or Republican persuasion would...

  9. What the Catholic bishops owe President Obama

U.S. Catholic bishops have a lot to worry about: the gunning down of children; 11 million undocumented immigrants, many of them Catholic; a warming planet; a chilly economy. Instead they've spent the last year obsessed with contraception. The bishops...

  11. Monday's Buzz: Is birth control coverage a right?

The Obama administration late last week proposed another compromise to its controversial policy on birth control coverage. The compromise would allow religiously affiliated institutions – including hospitals, universities and charities – with faith-based objections to birth control to provide health insurance plans to their employees that don’t include contraceptive coverage. Those employees would get the coverage for no cost through a separate plan, not arranged or financed by their employers. Supporters of the latest compromise hailed it as a way to guarantee access to birth control for women, regardless of where they work. Critics called it an accounting gimmick designed to hide a federal mandate, and said the public would end up picking up the cost for the benefit. Do you think the compromise is fair? Or should religiously affiliated institutions be exempt from any mandates, as churches are? Should all women have free access to birth control coverage? Talk about it!

  15. Safer sexting is now a Snap

Just so we're clear, I stand foursquare against the practice of minors electronically transmitting photographs of their private parts. No exceptions. Not to one another. Not to strangers. Not by text. Not by Twitter.

  23. In England, there's no separation of church and state

Religious conservatives in the United States  have been complaining that developments in the political arena – the Obamcare contraceptive mandate, the progress of same-sex civil marriage – threaten religious freedom. They’re crying wolf, but similar alarums in the Mother Country make a bit more sense.
