  7. Harris: 3 innovations from Chicago science scene that offer ideas, shape of things to come

Internet-centered technology has advanced to the point that smartphone apps and e-commerce sites seemingly sprout overnight. Indeed, many can be built inexpensively from off-the-shelf software in weeks. Scientific breakthroughs, however, often require decades of research and millions of dollars. At the end of every year, I feature three teams of Chicago innovators whose ideas won't hit the big-time soon but have the potential to improve, even save, our lives a decade from now.

The return of Lyric's engaging production of Puccini's "La Boheme," Saturday night at the Civic Opera House, nicely illustrated the point. The celebrated Russian soprano Anna Netrebko was making her much-anticipated Lyric debut as the consumptive heroine, Mimi, singing opposite the Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja as her lover, the poet Rodolfo.

  15. A reflection on literary retirements

Stop writing if you please, but for pity's sake, don't expect the world to look up from its lunch long enough to realize you've gone away.
In light of Philip Roth's recent announcement of his "retirement" from writing, a scene from the 1977 movie "Julia" comes to mind. It's a delicious cinematic moment, involving as it does the deft puncturing of pomposity — always satisfying to...
