  1. World Rabies Day has passed, but threat remains

    World Rabies Day 2011 was on Sept. 28. I do realize that this year’s rabies day has come and gone before I got the chance to write about it. However, it is never too late to emphasize the importance of rabies public awareness. World Rabies Day emphasizes the importance of vaccinations for pets, caution around wild animals, and control of feral cat and dog populations. The Kentucky Department for Public Health, local health departments, veterinarians and the Alliance for Rabies Control are working together to promote the Sept. 28 as the annual World Rabies Day.

    The actual definition of zoonotic diseases is diseases caused by infectious agents that can be transmitted between, or shared by, animals and humans. Unfortunately, there are a lot of zoonotic diseases that people can contract from animals. However, the occurrence or likelihood of someone becoming infected by one of these diseases is still pretty rare.   9. Jessamine S.A.V.E. Center receives grant to vaccinate dogs for influenza

    Jessamine County S.A.V.E. Center in Nicholasville now has help in protecting dogs against canine influenza virus (CIV), a highly contagious disease that spreads easily from dog to dog, especially those in close proximity. The shelter received a grant for the vaccines as part of a Petfinder.com Foundation program to build community immunity against this respiratory infection. The foundation partnered with Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health, a global animal health company and makers of the NOBIVAC(r) Canine Flu H3N8 vaccine, to fund the grant.
