  3. New hometown has a wealth of good people

Well, I went an entire week without an idea for a column, which is highly unusual for someone like me who never shuts her mouth. Now, I realize that extreme stress in one’s personal life can wipe one’s creative side of the brain clean as a whistle. Well sir, I am truly puzzled right now. You know how, as we age, we forget stuff? Being 80, I would like to blame "old-age forgetfulness" on why I never shared this with you, but just let me tell you my story, OK?

  15. Where in the World? The history of Ale-8-One, part 2

G.L. Wainscott was very successful in his business ventures, especially with the Roxa Kola brand of soda pop. He was not always so fortunate in his personal life, however. He married Sarah “Sallie” Bell Miller in about 1890, probably during his sojourn in Texas. There is some confusion about her name, as it was reported that Wainscott named the soft drink after his wife Roxanne. Although she signed her name “Sarah Bell” she is listed as “Ann” in the census of 1900. Thus, Ann or Roxanne may have been a nickname. Wainscott bought a lot in the Thomson Addition at the southwest corner of Maple and Belmont, and the couple built an elegant home, completed in the year 1899. Architecturally, the house was described as having “interior woodwork of a restrained Colonial Revival design that contrasts with the exuberant Queen Anne exterior.” A newspaper reported that the Wainscotts “had built a splendid home in a popular residence portion of the city.” Lee and Sarah sailed abroad for a tour of Europe and the Paris Exposition. Everyone supposed that “there was nowhere a more loving, happy and contented couple.”
