    Colum McCann's new novel, "TransAtlantic," begins in Newfoundland in 1919. Two British aviators, John Alcock and Arthur "Teddy" Brown, are preparing to attempt a historic feat: the first nonstop transatlantic flight. Veterans of the Great War, Alcock and Brown will make the trip in a modified Vickers Vimy bomber, laden with extra fuel instead of bombs. "The newspapers said anything was possible now," McCann writes. "The world was made tiny." An optimistic assessment, in light of the war that had just ended; or perhaps not, depending on how we read that "anything."
