The Central Union High boys’ tennis team prevailed against Cibola High of Yuma, 12-6, in a nonleague match on Thursday in El Centro.

In single play, No. 1 David Armenta beat his opponent, 6-7, 3-6, 6-0. No. 2 Ian Virey went 6-4, 3-6, 0-6; and No. 3 Nathan Vasquez went 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

In doubles, Central’s No. 1 team of Kim-Beltran won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0. No. 2s Ortega-Gutirrez were 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 on the day, and No. 3s Valenzuela-Topete won 6-3, 6-1, 6-1.

Central (2-2) hosts Holtville High on Wednesday, March 20.

SOFTBALL

Cougars squeeze by Tigers, 4-3

SPRING VALLEY — The Imperial High softball team fell to Steele Canyon High, 4-3, here Thursday.

Tigers pitcher Ashley Caro accrued seven strikeouts in the loss and had a hit, along with teammates Marie Alvarez, Daniela Garzon, Karissa Peña and Andrea Sotelo.

Imperial (4-4) will face Scripps Ranch High and Sweetwater High this Saturday, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., in the Hilltop High invitational.

Wildcats too much for Titans

CHULA VISTA — The Brawley Union High softball team outplayed Eastlake High of Chula Vista, 6-5, in the Hilltop High invitational here Thursday.

Pitcher Bree Rogers picked up the win. Hannah Rodriguez went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and Samantha Lima was 2 for 3 with a walk, two runs and also batted in the go-ahead RBI at the top of the third inning.

Brawley will continue its tourney run on Saturday at Hilltop High, against Clairemont High at 11 a.m. and Olympian High of Chula Vista at 1 p.m.

BOYS’ BASEBALL

Tigers advance to championship

EL CAJON — The Imperial High baseball team lost to Madison High, 1-0, in the Christian Patriot Invitational on Thursday.

On the mound, Brian Garrett pitched six innings, giving up two hits and totaling seven strikeouts. At the plate, he went 1 for 2 with a single, as did Matt Ortega.

Despite the loss, Imperial (3-2) will advance to the championship round by merit of run differential. The game will be played against Serra High this Saturday at 2 p.m. at Christian High.

MEN’S BASEBALL

Knights defeat Arabs, 6-1

SAN DIEGO — The Imperial Valley College baseball team came up short against San Diego City College, 6-1, in a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference game here Thursday.

Josh Evans led the way for the Arabs with two hits and an RBI. Isaiah Cruz also had two hits. Diego Briseño picked up a double and Santiago Arce scored a run.

IVC (2-15, 1-6 PCAC) play at San Diego City again today at 2 p.m.

TRACK AND FIELD

Brawley blows by Palo Verde

BRAWLEY — The Brawley Union High boys’ and girls’ teams overwhelmed Palo Verde Valley High of Blythe here Thursday. The boys won, 68-59, and the girls by a score of 84-21.

On the boys’ side, the 4x400-meter relay team of Soto, Jarra, Alarcon and Rogers won with a time of 3:40. Mizael Soto also won the triple-jump (38 feet, 1 inch) and the high-jump (5 feet, 8 inches). Josh Godinez won the long-jump (19 feet, 1 inch). Daniel Bernal won the 300-meter hurdles (44.07). Frank Perdomo won the 100-meter race (11.01) and Carlos Cervantes won both the 400m (51.6) and the 110 high-hurdles (14.99).

For the girls, the 4x100-meter relay team of Robles, Alexander, Zavala and Silver won (56.41). Kalynn Gutierrez won the 800m (2:53) and the 1,600 (5:44), while Vanessa Salazar won the 3,200 (14:17). Mia Adams took first in the 100 (12.05), the 200 (25.9) and the long-jump (15 feet, 2 inches). Kayla Silver won the 300-meter hurdles (54.7). Aliyah Waters won both the discus (79 feet) and the shot put (28 feet, 1 inch).

Brawley will race Imperial High next Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
