Closing of Main & Maple is sad
To the editor,
I am saddened to see that Main & Maple coffee house is closed. This really is a shame, as I am not alone in saying it was one of the very few places in downtown Nicholasville that I enjoyed visiting. I think this type of business is necessary in our community and that it could thrive again once the road construction is over. I would love to see it re-open when the streetscape work is completed. It truly was something unique for our small, growing community where shops such as Main & Maple are easily overshadowed by the next overpriced, chain coffee shop down the drag strip known as Nicholasville Road. This was the only coffee shop of its kind in Nicholasville, and I think having it reopened would benefit the local economy further down the road.

Why stop at smoking? Ban drinking, too
To the editor,
Smoking produces secondhand smoke, which is harmful to those who do not smoke. It is for this reason that our elected officials are proposing an anti-smoking ordinance. It’s in the interest of everyone’s health, after all.
For this reason, I propose we make the county dry. No alcohol sales, period. After all, drunk driving is a direct result of drinking, right? I don’t want to be in danger on the road because someone decided they’d have a few more drinks than they could handle. Also, there’s spousal abuse, endangerment, and liver disease to consider.
Let’s see our officials sweat when the ones who indulge in a drink now and again are faced with that particular proposal.
There’s more to this anti-smoking ordinance than just health concerns that we’re not being told.
