  1. New on the scene: Logan Square

Over the past few years, Logan Square has become more and more of a magnet for bar and restaurant owners looking to set up shop—and a flurry of new openings this fall and winter have only cemented this status. Here's a close-up look at one recent addition, plus quick tastes of six others.

  3. A 'Glengarry' that has forgotten its realistic soul

NEW YORK— Early in "Glengarry Glen Ross," as David Mamet brilliantly employs the scene-blackout-scene rhythm he learned sweeping floors at Chicago's Second City cabaret, Shelley can't-close-a-deal Levene is told that he cannot have the "premium leads" (translation: the only sales leads that might actually result in a sale) because they are not given out to a person who "falls below that mark."

  5. Hu's the boss

"They say, 'Tony, you're so crazy.' Yes, I am."
"They say, 'Tony, you're so crazy.' Yes, I am." You heard it from Tony Hu himself, chieftain of Chinatown. Something's off in his bitter melon. A sane businessman wouldn't open seven restaurants within a half-square-mile area, yet here we are, an...

  7. A taste of Lyon, France

Food? Art? History? It's all here in this slightly quirky city
Food? Art? History? It's all here in this slightly quirky city On that famous restaurant byway, Rue Merciere, servers were putting chairs on tabletops and sweeping up crumbs. I had arrived in this gourmand paradise far too late for dinner. Feeling...

  11. Pressed to find classic duck dish

Q: Many years ago I was dining in a restaurant in Chicago's Chinatown. I ordered pressed duck. It was served in a deep fried form about 6 inches in length, 4 inches wide and about an inch or so thick. The vegetables were pressed together with the duck and was served with a sauce. I don't know if it is Cantonese, Mandarin, etc. Chinese cookbooks contain no such recipe. For many years since that occasion I have dined in Chinese restaurants around the country and have never been able to find pressed duck prepared in this manner. I am seeking your help in finding a Chicago area restaurant that serves pressed duck in this manner or a recipe so that I may prepare it at home.

  13. Peruvian 101

Like any proud Peruvian (well, halvsies), I can't get through a conversation about the country without waxing nostalgic about my favorite foods: conchitas a la parmesana (scallops baked in Parmesan cheese), lenguado con mantequilla negra y alcaparras (sole sauteed in black butter with capers), ceviche de pescado (chunks of fresh fish "cooked" in the acid of key limes) &mdash; all eaten, preferably, beach-side while getting drowsy on pisco sours.

  15. Pubbelly: It's a small-plates world

    <img src="http://www.southflorida.com/images/southflorida/stars/b3stars-red.gif" alt="" />
Overall impression: While Pubbelly has been on my radar since it opened in the fall of 2010, it wasn't until February that I paid attention. That's when the James Beard Foundation included Pubbelly among its semifinalist nominations. While it didn't...

  21. What to expect from Chicago's celeb scene in 2012

It&rsquo;s hard to predict what we can expect from Chicago&rsquo;s celebrity scene in 2012. There could be another blockbuster movie coming our way (like &ldquo;Man of Steel&rdquo; in 2011) or one passing us over (&ldquo; The Dark Knight Rises&rdquo;). And there could be another celeb moving to the area (Rosie O&rsquo;Donnell) or one leaving it (LeAnn Rimes, after husband Eddie Cibrian&rsquo;s show &ldquo; The Playboy Club&rdquo; was canceled).

  23. New 4 a.m. on Division street

    Bucktown / Wicker Park
I recently got word that Shambles received the only 4 a.m. license on Division street in Wicker Park. So naturally, I dropped in to see what was up. It had been a minute since I had been to Shambles. When I walked in the door I noticed something…...
