1. Homage to fromage

My theory works: Surround myself with friends, good food and wine on New Year's Eve, and the future's so bright I gotta wear shades.
My theory works: Surround myself with friends, good food and wine on New Year's Eve, and the future's so bright I gotta wear shades. Some years my friends and I revel in an array of appetizers; others we cook up steaming bowls of stew or platters of...

3. Easy-to-make appetizers fit the bill for large holiday gatherings

Even those of us who enjoy the intimacy (and challenge) of sit-down-style dinner parties like the more informal holiday gatherings that revolve around appetizers and desserts for larger get-togethers. The host gets to strut a greater variety of...

5. Crispy, colorful eggplant towers that need no frying

I love the taste of fried eggplant in recipes, but I don't like what the usual ingredients — oil for frying and eggs with cholesterol — can do to my body. So I experimented until I discovered a way for breadcrumbs to stick to the eggplant — resulting in a crunchy outside and a soft, moist inside — without using egg and without frying the slices.

7. From anchovies to penne

Nothing makes weeknight dinners easier than keeping a fully stocked pantry. And nothing says "satisfying weeknight dinner" better than a family-size bowl of seasonally inspired pasta.

9. Irrational exuberance at the farmers market?

True confession: I always overbuy at the farmers market. If I go with limited dollars, I find myself looking for the best bargains. A full wallet prompts stocking up — for what, I am not sure, because I will go back the following weekend and perhaps hit the downtown markets during my lunch hour. I am just happier with a full complement of vegetables in the fridge.

11. Meatless mainstays

I'll be the first to admit it: My weekday cooking often slips into a rut. Most nights the options look familiar: chicken or pork on the grill, pasta with red sauce, steamed veggies and tossed salads. Nothing too exciting, but always healthier than fast food.

13. Chicken with pesto, tomatoes

I don't know whether this is a tale about the glories of pesto or one of faulty memory.
I don't know whether this is a tale about the glories of pesto or one of faulty memory. With summery basil pesto on my mind, and the desire to do something other than dressing pasta, I recalled a favorite dish from the famed Zingerman's Delicatessen in...

17. Birroteca about much more than pizza

When we first heard about Birroteca, it was described as an artisanal pizza joint. Birroteca does have pizzas — good, wood-fired pizzas with chewy crusts and fancy ingredients, but there's more to it than that. Some of your friends and...

19. Transplant birch trees in the spring

Is it too late to transplant crape myrtle or birch?
Is it too late to transplant crape myrtle or birch? In general, you can transplant until the ground freezes. Go ahead and transplant the crape myrtle. The birch, however, is on a short list of trees that are exceptions to the rule. It should be...

21. Culinary SOS: The Hungry Cat's tomato and watermelon salad

Los Angeles Times
Dear SOS: I had the most fantastic and flavorful summer salad at the Hungry Cat in Hollywood recently. It was an heirloom tomato salad with chunks of watermelon and some feta and herbs. I would love it if you might be able to obtain the recipe, as this is...
