5. From the Farm: Cold weather affects bees as well as crops

Well, here we go again. Freezing temperatures just when the fruit trees are in full bloom are not a good thing. We are waiting to assess the damage done by the cold spell experienced over the weekend. We, like everyone else, are hoping that the trees are past the point of incurring severe damage. Only time will tell.

  13. What to drink with a chicken in Oaxacan yellow mole? Something that takes the edge off

Recently, I was invited to a friend’s house in Patzcuaro (Michoacan), Mexico, and we spent the week madly cooking. The market there was so fantastic -- fat yellow chickens, fresh chayote, baby jicama, a rainbow of fresh and dried chiles, heaps of garlic and herbs. Indian women sat with produce from their gardens on blankets in front of them. They always had the freshest ingredients, including hand-patted corn tortillas, and when things were slow, they’d trim the thorns from nopales (cactus paddles).

This refreshing summer soup is typically made from a puree of garden-fresh tomatoes and vegetables, dried bread, a little oil for body and something bright -- vinegar, lemon juice -- to liven the flavors. Gazpacho is simple, and there are so many variations to try. May we offer some suggestions? You can find the related recipes below.

    Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
