  1. Restored or ruined? Malibu Lagoon project stirs strong opinions

Before the bulldozers arrived last June, Malibu Lagoon was a fully grown habitat for egrets, voles and tidewater gobies, studded with sycamore trees and clusters of tule reeds. Today, the lagoon's islands appear almost barren, covered by a sea of tiny red and blue plastic flags marking young plants just taking root.

  13. Indoor seedlings may need a little help as we wait for spring

So, is winter ever going to leave us? I feel so bad for all the birds that are migrating back to this yucky weather. Today I noticed my song sparrows are back and juncos are migrating through the area. I threw out a scoop of thistle and sunflower seeds for these and other ground feeders. Driving north on U.S. 31 recently, I saw a pair of sandhill cranes searching in the snow for a morsel of food. And the weather forecast, as I write this article says we may get more snow over the weekend. Ugh! OK, everyone think SPRING!

  21. Strawberries: Patch of pot of plants perfect way to get kids into gardening and good eats

Fresh, homegrown strawberries are ideal for introducing kids to edible gardening, according to gardening experts.  Kids -- with your gentle guidance -- can plant a whole patch, or just one or two plants in a strawberry jar or large pot.
