3. UPDATED @ 1 p.m.: Sandy's death toll climbs; millions without power

NEW YORK (AP) - Millions of people from Maine to the Carolinas awoke Tuesday without electricity, and an eerily quiet New York City was all but closed off by car, train and air as superstorm Sandy steamed inland, still delivering punishing wind and rain. The U.S. death toll climbed to 35, many of the victims killed by falling trees.

  5. MY TURN: Spin alley provides the punctuation mark for debate

Even a political junkie like me can admit there’s something counterintuitive about going to a place called “spin alley” to get the straight story on a serious political debate. 7. Locals join political party in Tampa

Two area men are among the thousands of political movers and shakers forced to wait out weather that forced the postponement of the first day of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. Dr. Naren James of Stanford and Garrard County Attorney Mark Metcalf of Lancaster, both alternate delegates representing Kentucky, arrived in Florida to find Monday’s festivities were a wash because Tropical Storm Isaac was still churning off shore. Although James had spent more time in his hotel room than expected, he described the intermittent rain, wind and glimpses of sunshine Monday as typical Florida weather.

  9. Q&A: Political experts chime in on vice-presidential contenders

With a Democrat incumbent and a Republican field winnowed down to one real contender, today’s presidential primary will be largely a formality for many area voters. The real intrigue is who Mitt Romney, the likely Republican presidential nominee, will choose as his running mate and participant in the Oct. 11 vice-presidential debate at Centre College.
