1. Central Kentucky Regional Humane Society draws national attention for tree decorations

LANCASTER - Mark Hurte, director of the Central Kentucky Regional Humane Society in Garrard County, decorated the no-kill shelter’s Christmas tree with Purina Pro Plan Rally to Rescue T-shirts, magazines, bandanas and banners to show its support as a Purina Ralley to Rescue Ambassador. Purina officials saw pictures of his design and like it so well they offered decorating instructions to their other partner shelters across the nation. “This is not a glamourous business,” Hurte said. “So anytime you get to do something that’s fun and creative to make people really take notice…it’s exciting.”

  3. A Christmas tune for dog lovers

All year long I try my best to write informative articles to educate pet owners about serious and sometimes devastating diseases of dogs and cats. So, at Christmas each year I like to have fun with a lighthearted approach to one of the more well known holiday songs. Most of us who are pet lovers enjoy a little pet humor from time to time.

  17. Down the Lane: It's all over but the shouting

Using a phrase my mom used to say, “It’s about all over with, but the shouting,” to describe how I feel about the last days before Christmas. Everything is wrapped up and waiting to be opened at our house for some excited little grandchildren. The adults usually are worn out by this time after each one has scrambled to get it all together at their own homes.

  21. Pet Corner: Christmas is a time for reflection and rejoicing

The Christmas holidays are truly a special time of year. It is a wonderful time to spend with family and friends laughing, reflecting, and rejoicing. All the special childhood memories of Christmas are still fresh in our minds as we strive hopefully to create wonderful memories for our children. I can still vividly remember the Christmas I got my first puppy for my very own. While visiting family the food is extremely tasty, but the real joy is the atmosphere including the smell of pumpkin pie, holiday decorations, and once a year conversation with certain family members.
