1. Stanford girl's volunteerism helps animals

STANFORD — Bethany Jackson asked her friends for some unusual presents on her 10th birthday — dog food, cat litter, animal shampoo. Delivering those things to the Danville-Boyle County Humane Society Animal Shelter during her party, she decided, would bring her more joy than any number of other gifts.

  5. The Conversation: Just, no

One of the many lessons I’ve learned — the hard way — is to live what I think of as a “Yes-Centric” life. Not so long ago, I realized I had a very well-established knee-jerk “No” built in that immediately not only...

  7. Boyle humane society hopes to expand security

  9. K-9 Corner: Dog's nose gives a clue about his overall well-being

A couple of months ago I wrote about dogs with the ability to sniff out strange objects, such as box turtles. These special animals help protect the turtles that need to be transferred to a safer place when new roads are built.

  11. K-9 Corner: Spend time with your sweetheart

Valentine’s Day is next week, so let’s think about giving our dogs a valentine — but not the paper kind. Instead, think of some activity that will show your love for your pet.

  13. Jags fly by Burgin, drop 90 on 'Dogs

Tuesday night's 90-67 win over Burgin showed East Jessamine at its best and at its worst.

Tuesday night's 90-67 win over Burgin showed East Jessamine at its best and at its worst. There were times that the Jaguars played tight man-to-man defense and moved the ball around on offense to find the open man and best shot. There were times when...

  15. Danville-Boyle County Humane Society pets of the week for Feb. 7

Our pets of the week are Matt and Gabe. Matt is a handsome, 8-month-old cat. In his picture, he has his “game face” on and looks rather serious, but Matt is quite loving and playful. Matt is an olive tabby with striking white markings. He is growing into a gorgeous cat, and he’ll be a wonderful addition to his new home.

  17. 'Listen' to your dog's body language

Dogs (and cats) can’t talk and tell us when they are sick or hurting. It would be nice if they could, wouldn’t it? My dog started exhibiting distress signals — ears pulled back, head lowered, back with a slight hump instead of a straight line, tail down to the ground. She also was panting and licking her nose a lot. All these are signs of stress and possibly pain. However, I noticed that all these signs were seen only when she was in the back of the house, if you opened the door to the front of the house, she was dancing on her tiptoes, bouncing around and wanting to play. Big mystery! After a visit to the veterinarian to make sure there wasn’t a physical problem, we figured that she had been traumatized by some men who were working on the roof. Guess she had never seen or heard strangers on the roof before. (She’ll have to resolve this in a hurry, because reindeer also make noise on the roof and you know how little time is left before Dec. 24.)

  21. The Pet Corner: Pets aren¿t the best impulse gifts

’Tis the season to be merry and to enjoy all the wonderful things that go along with this time of year. Shopping can even be enjoyable if you are in the right frame of mind. Too often during this joyous season, some people tend to become overwhelmed by all there is to do and end up frustrated by the crowds, traffic and bad weather.

  23. Pet Corner: Christmas is a time for reflection and rejoicing

The Christmas holidays are truly a special time of year. It is a wonderful time to spend with family and friends laughing, reflecting, and rejoicing. All the special childhood memories of Christmas are still fresh in our minds as we strive hopefully to create wonderful memories for our children. I can still vividly remember the Christmas I got my first puppy for my very own. While visiting family the food is extremely tasty, but the real joy is the atmosphere including the smell of pumpkin pie, holiday decorations, and once a year conversation with certain family members.
