Pioneer Playhouse is celebrating the opening of its newest attraction, Backstage Boutique, an arts and crafts store, with the first Pioneer Playhouse Arts and Crafts Fair. The fair is free and will run from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the museum area in front of the playhouse, said Holly Henson, artistic director at the playhouse.Last year, the Palace of Sweets, an ice cream parlor, opened up in the museum area and there is hope that all of the museums will have shops in them eventually, Henson said.“In a way, we’re becoming a mini-Gatlinburg,” she said. There will be 20 artists of all different skill levels selling crafts, from water color paintings to homemade brooms, Henson said. In addition, there will be several food vendors and the ice cream parlor will be open throughout the day.One artist makes heirloom style clothing, such as christening gowns, said Teresa Martin, organizer of the event and owner of Backstage Boutique.“A lot of the details are like they had back in the 17 and 1800s,” Martin said, “with all the hand stitching, tiny lace and embroidery.”The crafts are not just decoration, and some of them serve very practical purposes, Martin said. Her husband, Chuck Martin, is a blacksmith who makes decorative crosses and hooks.“He also does the utilitarian stuff,” Martin said, “Because we also have antique cars, he’s constantly having to redo little parts that go on those or repair parts that are on them.”There also will be demonstrations of loomwork, sewing, hand-dying and broom making throughout both days, Martin said.Debby Jorgensen, coorganizer of the event, hopes everyone will come out and look around just because of the variety of crafts being displayed and sold.“An arts and crafts fair is not just for ladies, it’s for everybody,” Jorgensen said. “The kids will find things that they like, men will find things that they like and it’s just a fun outing for the whole family.”
