  17. Prep Softball: Cards rally past Bourbon to reach district finals

George Rogers Clark isn’t ready to surrender its 40th District title just yet.Although the No. 3 seed and taking on the visitors role on their own field, the Lady Cardinals advanced to the finals of the tournament with an exciting 3-1 triumph over Bourbon County Tuesday night at Cardinal Heights.Clark will take on Montgomery County in the finals set for 6 tonight at Cardinal Heights. The Lady Indians shut out Paris 10-0 in an opening-round game Monday before inclement weather postponed the Clark-Bourbon County encounter. The game was suspended with two outs in the top of the second Monday and tied at 0-0. The Lady Colonels scored the first run on a pair of Clark errors in the third inning, but the Lady Cards tied the score at 1-1 when Shamy Williams crossed the plate on a Bourbon error after opening the inning with a double.Williams, who had two of Clark’s four hits, broke the 1-1 deadlock with a single in the seventh that scored Amy Haggard. Williams scored on a bunt single by Kolbi Mitchell for the final margin.“We knew what we had to do (to win) and we just took care of business,” Williams said afterward. “I thought it would be a really close game. They’re a good team and it’s been close every time we played them this season. We knew we would have to play hard (to win the game).”“We all put our heads together, finally,” Mitchell added with a smile.Clark coach Matt Puckett said the victory consisted of a “team effort” despite four hits against Bourbon pitcher Haley Wagner, who retired the first 12 batters she faced before Williams laced a double to open the fifth frame.“They found a way to get one run and when we got the one run, we came back and got two big hits (in the seventh inning),” Puckett said. “You get a two-run lead against a team like (Bourbon), you really have to take it home, because See CLARK, B2they’re a really good team. I’m just excited that we get to go on (to the regional tournament).”Clark pitcher Amy Haggard was in command throughout the contest. The senior pitcher fired a three-hitter, finished with nine strikeouts and retired 12 of the last 14 batters she faced. Haggard was all smiles afterward and was pleased Clark gained revenge on the Lady Colonels, who defeated Clark 7-6 in the last meeting between the two district foes.“I’m the leader of the team and I have to be focused the whole game,” Haggard said. “We had to show them who was boss on our home field.”In addition to timely hitting in their last at-bat, which featured three straight singles, Clark’s defense was equally impressive as the game progressed. Leftfielder Alli Martin made an over-the-shoulder catch for the second out in the fourth inning, while Mitchell made a catch in foul territory near the Clark dugout for the second out of the seventh inning.Williams hopes the revenge tour continues against the Lady Indians, who swept Clark during the regular season.“It’s going to be a tough game,” she said. “We’ve got it if we come out and play (as) a team like we did today.”
