Tigers and Astros
Tigers and Astros Phil Rogers, Chicago Tribune There's no hitter better than Miguel Cabrera. He absolutely kills the ball when a pitcher makes a bad pitch and he adjusts to get the barrel on good pitches. He's the most talented hitter and maybe also...

9. A sizable left-handed complement

KANSAS CITY. Mo. — Encouraging performances Thursday from Hector Santiago and John Danks could present the White Sox with an odd scenario at the end of May. They could have four left-handers pitching well enough to form the bulk of the rotation...

13. Whispers: Nieves unsung hero for Red Sox

With everyone rushing to praise John Farrell for the resurgence of Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz, don't overlook the work of new pitching coach Juan Nieves, who learned a lot working alongside Don Cooper with the White Sox. … The Diamondbacks have done a tremendous job compensating for Justin Upton's absence, especially with Adam Eaton sidelined with a bad elbow. But anything short of a playoff finish rightfully will be blamed on the trade. You wonder why Upton wasn't more valued in Arizona, especially given his club-friendly contract situation. … Randall Delgado, the right-hander the Cubs would have gotten from the Braves if Ryan Dempster had not blocked that trade, had a 10.80 ERA after his first four starts in the Diamondbacks' system. The D'backs are very happy with right-hander Zeke Spruill, who was acquired alongside Martin Prado, Nick Ahmed, Brandon Drury and Delgado in the deal that sent Upton and the .403-hitting Chris Johnson to the Braves. … With everything else going wrong for the Dodgers, Hyun-jin Ryu is showing why the Cubs hated losing a posting auction to them. If the Cubs had gotten the rights to Ryu, they wouldn't have been in the market for a veteran starter when they bid heavily on Anibal Sanchez before signing Edwin Jackson to a $52 million deal. … Philip Humber's 0-5 start with the Astros has his head reeling. His first three starts were OK, but the Indians knocked him out in the first inning April 20 and the Red Sox pounded him Thursday. He may be on a short leash in Bo Porter's rotation. … The keys to the Pirates' fast start have been Starling Marte's impact and the consistent success of setup man Mark Melancon and closer Jason Grilli. Melancon and Grilli had 27 strikeouts and four walks in their first 23 innings. … Don't be surprised if Freddy Garcia joins the Orioles' rotation next weekend. He has compiled a 2.81 ERA in four starts at Triple A and can exercise an out clause in his contract if he isn't promoted to the big leagues after five starts. … While David Ortiz's "this-is-our-bleeping-city'' speech has added to his folk hero standing in Boston, the Red Sox brass feels best that he's back to running hard, a sign that his heels feel good. … Nothing is dumber than big league outfielders throwing to the plate when the game isn't on the line. And no one makes more bad throws showing off his arm than the Astros' Rick Ankiel, who winged one into the seats at Fenway Park in the first inning Thursday. … Thumbs up to the Phillies' Laynce Nix, who has had his bat company make some special bats saying "Pray for West, Texas April 17, 2013." He's going to sell them to bring attention to the victims of the fertilizer plant explosion at that town south of Dallas.

15. Giants' success more than following lucky stars

Before they became the best organization in baseball, the Giants were Barry Bonds' team. They seemed unable to break free from the flawed slugger for a long time, sticking with the disgraced star for six years after his record-setting 2001 season.

19. Whispers: Yankees may get desperate enough for Soriano

The Yankees appear to be imploding around GM Brian Cashman, making some wonder if the Steinbrenner brothers will become more involved. If they do, Alfonso Soriano could be in play in trade talks before opening day. Cashman wants nothing to do with the two years left on the Cubs outfielder's contract but injuries to Mark Teixeira, Curtis Granderson and Alex Rodriguez could dictate the addition of a veteran. …
