1. Ravens defense ends minicamp with impressive performance

It's not unusual for the defense to be ahead of the offense at this point, but it appears the Ravens have a chance to be special again.
It's not unusual for the defense to be ahead of the offense at this point, but it appears the Ravens have a chance to be special again. In the three-day minicamp that ended Thursday, the Ravens were impressive on defense and completely dominated the...

3. Terrell Suggs slimmer and humbler as he prepares for another season

There were no quips or witty sound bites. He didn't throw out any of his favorite movie quotes or rap into the microphone. He didn't even publicly challenge Tom Brady or vow to inflict pain on opposing quarterbacks.

5. Ravens news, notes and opinions

Having signed all their draft picks except first-rounder Matt Elam, having shored up their biggest perceived weakness with the signing of linebacker Daryl Smith and with very little salary cap room to do much else, it’s hard to imagine the Ravens being too active over the next five weeks before the start of training camp. However, something clearly has to be worked out with the status of Pro Bowl fullback Vonta Leach. As my colleague Aaron Wilson reported last week, the Ravens, who took Leach’s potential successor, Kyle Juszczyk, in the fourth round of April’s draft, are expected to craft a proposal to adjust his contract, which carries a $4.33 million salary cap hit for the coming season. Leach sounds like he is prepared for the situation, telling reporters last week that, “When the situation comes, I think we’ll take care of it.” The Ravens clearly love Leach as a player and as a leader. Without knowing how Juszczyk will handle lead-blocking duties in his rookie season, they believe that Leach, probably the best lead blocker in the game, has an important place on the team. However, they also could use a little more cap flexibility and Leach’s contract may be the most realistic place to get it. It sounds like the situation could come to a head shortly. Like Anquan Boldin, Leach is a proud guy and I’d imagine trying to convince him to take a pay cut is going to be a tough sell for Ozzie Newsome and company. But it behooves both sides to work something out.

7. Minicamp marks move to 2013 season

Over the past four months, the Ravens have certainly enjoyed the spoils of victory. They have hosted parties and attended parades in their honor. They have made appearances on "Live with Kelly and Michael", "Dancing with the Stars" and the "Late Show...

A year ago, Ravens defensive coordinator Dean Pees was the new kid on the block. Now, he's teaching a bunch of new players.

13. Pees doesn't want to compare but knows this year's defense needs to be better than last year

Lost amid most of the talk about the Ravens’ overhaul of their Super Bowl-winning defense is the fact that during the regular season, last year’s group was serviceable on its best days and extremely vulnerable on its worst.

15. Upshaw's weight issue and other Ravens news, notes and opinions

You at least have to give young outside linebacker Courtney Upshaw some credit in acknowledging that he’s fighting weight issues and “it’s not a good look” to come into the various minicamps for a second straight year out of shape. There are plenty of players that won’t even do that, no matter how obvious it looks. Before participating in teammate Lardarius Webb’s charity softball game yesterday, Upshaw told reporters, including my colleague Aaron Wilson, that he currently weighs 285 pounds, which is at least 15 pounds heavier than he played at last season. Upshaw admitted that he’s had some “personal issues” that have prevented him from fully devoting his time and attention to working out. It would be unfair to crush the guy without knowing what he’s dealing with on a personal level. However, I think it is fair to point out that questions about his work ethic caused Upshaw to slide into the second round of last year’s draft. And when he reported for last year’s offseason activities, he was heavier than team officials had hoped. This is a big training camp for Upshaw, too. The Ravens signed Elvis Dumervil, relegating Upshaw to a reserve role. Upshaw remains very much in the team’s plans, but he’s going to have to earn his defensive snaps and coming in out of shape is probably the quickest way to earn time in head coach John Harbaugh’s doghouse.

19. Same ol' Flacco but a different Ravens' team prepares for 2013

Joe Flacco is no longer barraged with questions about former offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, finding consistency or even his capability to win the big game. Now the owner of one of the richest contracts in the history of the sport and two weeks away from receiving a sparkling Super Bowl ring, Flacco's status as the Ravens' franchise quarterback will probably never be this secure.
