3. Cubs' 101-loss season in Sveum's rearview mirror

MESA, Ariz. — Dale Sveum is either an optimist or a guy with big bills to pay. He not only showed up for his second season as the Cubs' manager but somehow seems confident it will be better than his first.

  7. Gays in sports: On the field -- and in the closet

When I was 7 years old, my friends and I would play football in my backyard for hours, often with my mother watching through the kitchen window. One of the games we played was called "smear the queer." At the time I didn't know what "queer" meant. I only knew if you were brave enough to pick up the ball, you were "the queer" and would get creamed.

  15. The fourth outfielder

Yup, I won a game for the Cubs when I was 9 years old, a kind of pre-pubescent reverse-Bartman deal. The next day's Chicago Tribune called the anonymous fan who interfered with a critical eighth-inning play "the fourth outfielder," which. with its resonance of "The Four Horsemen of Notre Dame," may have been the nicest thing anyone has ever called me, even if it implied I was playing that day for the Mets when I knew for sure that I was actually helping the Cubs. The picture in theChicago Sun-Times showed me with my eyes closed as I tried to make the catch just above the ivy on the wall.

This story was first published in the Tribune on May 22, 2011. The voice is softer now but as affable and entertaining as ever. Moose Skowron still has many, many tales to tell. Like the night Marilyn Monroe was flirting -- only not with Skowron, nor...

  21. Quintessential Santo

Heel clicking: While running to the clubhouse after a thrilling walk-off win at Wrigley Field in June 1969, Santo spontaneously jumped in the air and clicked his heels together a few times. Manager Leo Durocher told Santo to "make that our victory kick," starting a tradition that made Cubs fans roar while infuriating the competition.
