FRANKFORT (AP) — About 40 Kentuckians died and about 200,000 were stricken by the Asian flu epidemic that blitzed the state, state epidemiologist J. Clifford Todd said. But the epidemic hit its peak last week and likely will decline steadily for the next three weeks, Todd said Friday. He said the 115,302 cases reported to the state Health Department since Jan. 1 was a “gross underestimation.” Many cases were treated privately by doctors and not reported.

Two local high school pupils have been selected from among 76 contestants to attend the Rotary-sponsored World Affairs Institute March 29 and 30 in Cincinnati. They are Raymond Smith from St. Agatha Academy, and James Al Crowe from Clark High.

Jimmy Rainey presented the program on high school basketball officiating at Thursday’s meeting of the Winchester Optimist Club at the Brown-Proctor Hotel. An announcement was made that the Optimist-sponsored physical fitness contest for Clark County youth will be held on the high school football field in May.
