( Bob Flynn/bflynn@winchestersun.com / August 8, 2012 ) Workers with Codell Construction lay block Tuesday atop an interior wall of the new Clark County elementary school. The new $13 million school, which is being constructed directly behind Central Elementary School, can house 600 students and is scheduled to open in August 2013. The new elementary will be occupied by students from Central, Pilot View and Fannie Bush elementary schools, all of which are slated to be closed when the new school opens. |

Hopefully this facility will meet all the needs of the three schools mentioned. When will the county school board address the schools whose population are have swelled way beyond their building capacity? I would think their current status could prove critical in the event of an emergency or natural disaster.

From what I understand, there are a handful whose population are quite a bit over what is recommended for their respective building. I'm not sure how fire codes come into play, but I would think overcrowded schools would warrant serious attention. I'd wager that with the financial cutbacks of recent years, that equates to classrooms around 30. I'm sure if that's the case, the schools aren't adequately staffed to cover the needs of these kids.
