The George Rogers Clark High School choir will host a special concert and chili cook-off Thursday, Oct. 25 a the school cafeteria at 5 p.m.
The menu includes different types of chili, along with bread, desserts, coffee, tea and water.
Several soloists from Chamber Singers will entertain during dinner.
The GRC choirs will present after-dinner music in the auditorium. The participating choirs are the concert choir, Cardinal Singers, chamber choir and show choir.
Tickets are $5 for adults and students, and children 5 and under are free. To enter chili in the cook-off, the fee is $5. All proceeds will help fund choir events throughout the year.
First, second, and third place winners in the chili cook-off will receive a prize. Anyone interested in entering the competition should contact Kasey Standridge at kasey.standridge@clark.kyschools.us.
A limited number of tickets will be sold at the door.
The choirs will present “Music about Music.” The concert choir will open the concert program with a piece written by the American composer Carl Strommen, titled “We Are the Music,” followed by a piece of modern choral music entitled “A Choral Flourish,” with a combination of Latin and English text.
The Cardinal singers will open their portion of the concert with a piece written by an up-and-coming Mary Lynn Lightfoot, titled “Cantate Hodie! (Sing Today).” This piece also combine Latin and English text.
They will then perform Eugene Butler’s “Autumn Song” before closing with Greg Gilpin’s “Why We Sing.”
The second half will begin with the GRC Show Choir performing Mac Huff’s arrangement of “Rise Up and Sing” and Ed Lojeski’s arrangement of “You Can’t Stop the Beat” from Hairspray.
The chamber choir’s concert pieces will include Linda Spevacek’s “To Music,” Felix Mendelssohn’s “Die Nachtigall (The Nightingale),” and Ed Henderson’s arrangement of the traditional Argentinian carol “El Cielo Canta (The Heavens Sing).”
The chamber choir will close the concert with a piece arranged by Moses Hogan, “Music Down in My Soul.”
The GRC choirs will participate in many other events throughout the year.
