Concerned about middle school merger

Dear editor:

I am very concerned about the middle school merger after attending the public forum on Oct. 23.

The architect indicated what categories of work the state would pay for but also said that they did not yet know what work was going to be required.

This means to me the George Rogers Clark High School renovation has not been planned, there is no breakdown of the work required and there is no timeframe for the work to be completed.

The architect also stated that they generally have eight weeks out of the year to work in the school facility without teachers or students being in the building.

This tells me that either the renovations are going to take place with the students in the building or they are going to take several years.

I, for one, am not in favor of placing our middle school students in a 48-year-old facility that is clearly in poor shape (otherwise it would not have been replaced). The current facilities plan has serious deficiencies and flat out omissions.

I think it’s clear that this merger needs to be reevaluated. It should certainly not go forward until an actual plan is in place.

Sincerely,
Mark Knight
