The Winchester Sun won several top Kentucky Press Association awards Friday.
The Kentucky Press Association held its 144th convention over the weekend at The Brown Hotel. As a part of the convention, KPA announced the winners of its Excellence in Kentucky Newspapers competition and also installed new officers.
The Sun won first-place awards for best sports column, best sports feature story, best lifestyle page and best front page. Second-place awards included best general news story, best sports column, best headline, best spot news picture, best special section, best sports page/section and best lifestyle page. Third-place awards were received for best sports feature story, best on-going/extended coverage story, best picture essay (spot, general or feature), best sports picture and best sports picture essay. An honorable mention was received for best feature story.
Two of the Sun’s sister publications, The Advocate Messenger in Danville and the Jessamine Journal, were awarded first place for general excellence. Other newspapers receiving general excellence awards were the Todd County Standard, Springfield Sun, Kentucky Standard in Bardstown, Madisonville Messenger, Lexington Herald-Leader, Fort Campbell Courier and the Kentucky Kernel (University of Kentucky).
Willie Sawyers, publisher of the London Sentinel Echo and Corbin Times Tribune, was elected president of the newspaper organization for 2013. Scott Schurz Jr,, with Advocate Communications in Danville, was elected president elect and Rick Welch, publisher of the Madisonville Messenger, was elected vice president. Loyd Ford, publisher of The Lake News in Calvert City, was installed as treasurer and John Mura, multi-media manager for the Louisville Courier-Journal is past president after serving 2012 as president of KPA.
