A 17-year-old is facing multiple charges after he was spotted stealing gasoline from a home near Forest Grove and Old Boonesboro Road Monday morning.

The juvenile, whose name was not released due to his age, then ran from deputies when they tried to arrest him, Clark County Sheriff Berl Perdue Jr. said.

“One of my off-duty reserve deputies saw a juvenile stealing gas,” Perdue said. “They ended up getting in a pursuit.”

The juvenile had been riding a scooter through the area before the theft but was on foot when he was observed taking the gasoline. The juvenile was arrested following a foot pursuit of three to four minutes, Perdue said.

Once the juvenile was in custody and deputies began investigating, they discovered that the scooter was stolen as well, Perdue said. The scooter’s owner was not aware that it was missing and had not filed a report, Perdue said.

The juvenile was arrested and charged with theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property and fleeing or evading police. The juvenile was lodged in the Fayette County Juvenile Detention Center, Perdue said, and the case will be prosecuted through juvenile court. Under state law, juvenile court proceedings are closed hearings and the records are sealed.
