Winchester Girl Scout troop hosts Heart Ball for fathers, daughters

Local Girl Scouts will celebrate Valentine’s Day this year with some very special dates — their fathers.

Troops 680 and 652 are partnering to organize the Heart Ball, a special father-daughter dance Feb. 10 at Providence Elementary.

“We are so excited,” Troop 680 leader Rachael Lane said.

She is the mother of troop member Emma Lane, and leads the girls with Nikki Pendley and Sarah Snowden.

“It was actually the idea of one of the parents,”¿Lane said.

However, the troop leaders and other parents thought it was a good way to let the troop members have fun, and get the father figures more involved.

“We’re trying to make this as nice as possible,”¿Lane said.

The event is free to girls. Haggard’s Flower Shop is providing wristlets and boutonnieres at a reduced cost. Attire is dressy, but girls are free to wear church clothing or dress-up costumes. Lane said leaders did not want girls to feel obligated to buy new dresses to make the event inviting to everyone.

Troop members also can bring stepfathers, uncles, brothers or other special guests. Little sisters are invited, too. Lane said her husband, Dale, will be escorting Emma and her two little sisters.

“I know my husband is excited,” Lane said.

Volunteers will decorate the gym, including streamers, balloons and lights, and Lane said she hopes to provide a red carpet.

A photographer will be taking pictures of the Girl Scouts and their escorts, and Lynn Toler is donating his time to DJ the event.

“It’s just something different,”¿Lane said.
