A father and his passenger both went to jail after leaving a 7-year-old boy behind as they ran from police following a four-vehicle crash Wednesday morning on Boone Avenue.

Eric S. Johnson, 30, of 127 College St. Apt. 1, was behind the wheel of a Toyota Avalon at the center of the accident. Police said Johnson ran from the scene after he hit three other vehicles and took out a street sign. Meanwhile, Johnson and his passenger, 22-year-old Aaron Spencer, fled on foot and left Johnson’s son, who also fled, nearby.

Winchester Police officers Danny Dennis and Christine Matthews found the child and later located and arrested both Johnson and Spencer. Johnson was charged with driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, endangering the welfare of a minor and failure to maintain insurance. Spencer was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and wanton endangerment, according to police.

The accident happened at 11:03 a.m. Wednesday as Johnson attempted to turn from College Street onto Boone Avenue. He pulled out into traffic without seeing oncoming vehicles in either direction, police said. Johnson’s car struck a pickup truck, crossed the center line and bounced off a tractor trailer coming the opposite direction.

Johnson’s car then spun around  and went through a yard and damaged a street sign before reentering College Street and striking a fourth vehicle. The pickup truck, driven by David L. Evans of Speedwell, Tenn., also struck the tractor trailer, which was driven by John T. Manus Jr. of Valdosta, Ga. No one in the two trucks nor the fourth vehicle, a car driven by Kristina L. Abner of 323 S. Burns ave., were injured.

Eric Johnson was taken to Clark Regional Medical Center with unspecified injuries.
