Who is responsible for a school’s protection?

To the editor,

Recent news reports that parents of a child that survived the Conn. school shooting are suing the school and/or state for failing to provide a safe environment for their child.
The question here is, “Are schools responsible for the safety of children while these children are in their care?” And, “Are the schools negligent when children are hurt, harmed or murdered while in their care?”
If there is a known threat to a children in school, and the school does nothing to protect the children from that threat, and the children are hurt or killed due to that known threat, are the schools liable?

Recent history of school murders in high school, elementary schools and colleges, and universities, including the murders of 20 small children in the Conn. school makes it clear that there are crazy/psychotic/psychopathic murderers in our society that will murder children if given the opportunity.

Therefore, there is a known threat to our children in schools. Most colleges and universities have police officers on campus. According to recent news reports some high schools and elementary schools now have police protection in schools. Most high school sand elementary schools have buzzers to buzz people in, and security cameras, but most do not have mature, properly trained police officers at the door.
It’s noted here that the president, Congress and governors have police protection. Should our children have police protection from psychopathic murderers in our schools?

Most people of average intelligence will agree that there is a real threat to our children in schools. Are the schools and/or the states liable for not providing proper police protection for our children, when that negligence results in children being murdered?

Sincerely,
Lannie Ray

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

To the editor,

The saying is true that when people are nice, they don’t have to be nice to you, and when people are nice to you, the least you can do is say thank you! We have been delightfully showered with kindness during the passing of our father, grandfather, husband, and friend Charles Edward Simmons! It is simply amazing to see how one man positively touched so many people’s lives.

What a legacy he leaves behind; what big shoes we as his family and friends have to fill! He was truly a man of God and he definitely fought the good fight and ran a swift race. We cannot say thank you enough for the cards, flowers, food, remembrances, stories, calls, visits, thoughts, and prayers that we received during the time of this wonderful man’s passing.

There were so many people that showed acts of kindness, that we cannot thank each and every one of you personally, but we are telling you publically! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! May God bless and keep each one of you and if there is anything we can do for you, don’t hesitate to call us up!

Bless you,
The Simmons Family

Barr giving aid to all?

To the editor,

I see that our new representative Andy Barr has voted against aid to Hurricane Sandy victims.

If the 6th district is hit by tornadoes or other natural disasters in the future can we expect the same compassionate response?
