Team: George Rogers Clark High School.
Coach: Kevin Cope, first season.
Last year: The Cardinals shot a 326 and finished seventh in the 9th Region Tournament at Gibson Bay Golf Course in Richmond. Returnee Blake Cartwright fired a 74 and missed a state tournament berth by two strokes. Ross Todd followed Cartwright with a 78 in last year’s regional tournament.
Top Returnees: Cartwright and Todd lead an impressive list of returning players, a list which includes, Matthew Omohundro, Jacob Omohundro and Allan Henry. All five players competed in the regional tournament last year in Richmond.
Outlook: Cope takes over for Will Meurer, who spent one season at the helm after taking over for longtime coach Wes Martin. Cope said in order to have a successful season, the Cards will need “consistent, quailty play from each team member.”¿Cope has been pleased with his team’s performances during the preseason.
“During practices, the golfers have been shooting some good scores. Therefore, we just need to maintain that (same) level of play during tournament time.” Cope said it’s “too early” to single out “distinguish” his team’s weaknesses. “There is no doubt that we have weaknesses, however, it will take being further into the season before I will be able to pinpoint those (weaknesses) that are specific to our team.” With all of his top players returning, Cope said experience will be his team’s biggest attribute. “Some players have competed in individual tournaments over the summer, which has allowed them to gain a higher level of tournament experience.” With a roster featuring experience, Cope said his top goal is “four us to be competitive in tournament play.”
Region favorite: Madison Central. “Most of their 2011 regional championship team will be returning,” Cope said.
Quoting Cope:¿“I’m coming into the season with high expectations. I know that I have a group of talented golfers that should compete to win some tournaments. The golfers have put in a lot of work and have been shooting really good scores in practice. With the experience that we have, I expect the players to shoot these same scores when the pressure is on in tournament play.”
