The George Rogers Clark softball and baseball teams split a pair of games against rival Bourbon County Thursday.
At Cardinal Heights, the Lady Cardinals suffered a 12-2 setback to the Lady Colonels in five innings, while the Cardinals avenged an earlier season loss to the Colonels with a 3-1 triumph at Cardinal Field.
In the softball contest, Bourbon (19-6) scored three runs in the first inning and put the game away with a six-run outburst in the fifth inning.
Clark (11-16) trailed 4-2 going into the fourth after scoring a run in the third inning, but Bourbon answered by crossing the plate eight times in the final two innings.
Clark managed just five hits off Bourbon County pitcher Haley Wagner. Meg Terrell, Kolbi Mitchell, Whitney Conkwright, Abbi Puckett and Madison Norton each had singles. Puckett’s base hit in the second inning produced an RBI.
Wagner went the distance and collected four strikeouts, while walking one batter and hitting another. Clark starter Whitney Conkwright went the distance and scattered nine hits, with three of those coming in the fifth frame.
Allison Sandefur highlighted Bourbon’s breakthrough inning with a two-out, bases-loaded triple for the final margin. Sandefur drove in a pair of runs with a single in the first inning and finished with five RBIs.
Conkwright fanned four, issued seven walks and hit one batter.
At Cardinal Field, the Cardinals broke a 1-1 deadlock with a run in the bottom of the third and tacked on another score in the fourth to hold off the Colonels.
Bourbon County ace Chase Mullins threw a one-hitter and struckout 10, while walking six.
Clark’s Wes Lawwill collected the Cards’ lone hit of the contest with an RBI double in the second inning.
Clark’s top pitcher Derek McKenzie scattered seven hits and fanned three hitters.
Bourbon stranded six batters, while Clark left four runners on base.
Clark improved to 13-11 overall and 4-1 in the 40th District. The Colonels dropped to 17-3 overall and 5-1 against district foes.
The Cardinals are scheduled to compete in the Tanner Dodge Classic this weekend in Stanton.
The Lady Cardinals play host to Western Hills and Henry Clay in a doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m. tonight at Cardinal Heights.
