Phil and Teresa Montgomery stayed on task from start to finish, firing an eight-under-par 64 to outdistance the field and capture the annual July Fourth String Tournament Wednesday at the Winchester Country Club.
Their final total was three shots better than the trio of teams that tied for second — Paxton and Lisa Mahan, Ryan and Katy Midden and Chris and Christie Aaron.
Alone in fifth place at 68 were defending champions Barry and Mary Jane Warner, followed by scores of 69 from Alex Rowady and Caroline Browning, Jeff and Karen Browning, Dudley Taylor and Marcy Goff and Steve and Julia Adams.
Tenth place at 71 was shared by Travis and Lauren Mullins, Bill and Chris Dodson, and Paul and Claudia Embs, while Chad and Davida Abner finished at even par 72.
A total of 51 teams (102 players) braved the record-breaking temperatures to participate in the annual event.
