Golf: Mahan captures stroke play event at Winchester Country Club
Paxton Mahan used three birdies midway through the final round to grab a share of the lead and steadied his way home, edging out Justin Charles by one stroke to claim the Winchester Country Club Stroke Play Championship.
Mahan returned scores of 70-70 for a total of 140, while Charles scored 68-73 and fired a 141.
Finishing a distant third was Ryan Midden (75-72 — 147), followed by Ronnie Snowden, Jr. (77-71 — 148). Fifth went to George Rogers Clark golfer Blake Cartwright (74-75 — 149), with sixth place 151 scores posted by Ryan Richardson (76-75), Jason Divita (74-77) and Rex Smith (72-79).
The top eight from the tournament earned spots in the Match Play Club Championship field, which will be held Labor Day weekend.
Rick Smith remained in control of the Senior Stroke Play title, posting a 79-74 for a total of 153 to ease past John Stotts and Keith McDonald, who both returned scores of 78-78 — 156 to share the runner-up spot.
Jason Clark fired rounds of 69 and 66 for a 135 to claim the net championship. A total of 42 club members participated in the two-day event.
