The George Rogers Clark baseball team picked up its first win of the season with a 5-0 shutout of Estill¿County Saturday afternoon in Irvine.
It marked the first career win for coach Matt Ginter, whose team had lost its first seven games to open the season.
Ginter, a former standout at the school and major league pitcher, is in his first season as baseball coach at Clark.
The Cardinals (1-7) scored one run in the third inning, added another in the fourth and broke the game open with a pair of runs in the sixth inning.
Clark pitcher Derek McKenzie went the distance and tossed a three-hitter and struck out six batters and walked just one.
Logan McQuerry paced the Cards’ offensive attack with three hits, followed by Brent Stoneking with a pair of hits. McQuerry and Stoneking combined for three RBIs. Two of McQuerry’s three hits were doubles.
Clark left 10 runners on base, compared to four for the Engineers.
In a game played Friday at Cardinal Field, the Cardinals rallied from a 6-0 deficit, but came up short in an 8-6 setback to Powell County.
McQuerry led the Cards with three hits, while Taylor Howard and Hunter Osborne connected on a pair of hits apiece.
Howard slapped a single and a double, while Osborne and teammate Wes Lawwill each connected on a home run, with both of those dingers coming in the second inning.
Osborne drove in three runs and Stoneking, Zach Roe and Luke Sharrock each had a hit. Osborne relieved Stoneking on the mound in the second inning and went the next four innings. Osborne scattered five hits, gave up five hits, walked three and fanned three batters.
