Coach: Jessica Laswell, third season.
Last year: The Lady¿Cardinals went 15-6-1 and lost to eventual state champion Notre Dame in the opening round of the state tournament. Clark compiled a 9-0 record against 12th Region opponents and went 7-0 in district competition. The Lady Cards defeated Bourbon County 2-0 in the district championship and then dealt the Lady Colonels a 3-0 setback in the region finals. The title was the school’s first in 13 years.
Starters lost: Nine.
Top returnees: Cora Kerber, Hayley Thornberry and Courtney White. Kerber was region player of year.
Outlook: The Lady Cards are in rebuilding mode after losing nine seniors from last year’s squad that put Clark back on the state map. “We’re learning a lot about each other and we’re going to have to learn to play together and as a team,” Laswell said. “Our young players also need to have confidence in themselves and go out there and really be ready to add to this team.” Laswell said her squad is “learning to play together” and added that she’s “trying to mix as many girls who are all new to each other.” “We’ve got some great young talent and girls who really work hard to add to the few players that we have with experience.” Laswell said her goals for this year are to “develop team camaraderie off the field, learn to help each other and really be a team on the field.”
Team to beat in district: Montgomery County and Bourbon County. Laswell hopes her team is in the mix by the end of the regular season. “Montgomery County is always a rival and Bourbon always has a good team,” Laswell said. “I hope we can win district again.”
Quote: “It’s going to be an interesting season after losing so many seniors and with high expectations from last year. If the girls can learn to communicate and work together, I think we could be great again. They’ve got to find something in them though to fight to win, because with our schedule, we’re definitely not going to be given any (favors).”
