The George Rogers Clark volleyball team went five sets with Harrison County in its home opener Tuesday night and came away with a 3-2 win over the Fillies at Norton Gymnasium.
Clark won the first set 25-15, then lost the next two 21-25 and 19-25, before capturing the last two sets 25-14 and 15-4.
“We hung in there and never gave up,” Clark coach Robyn Curry said. “It was a great experience playing the best three out of five. We got tired, but I was pleased with my girls’ energy level in the last two matches. It was our first home game in front of home fans, so we were a little nervous.”
Curry said her team’s defense proved to be a difference in the outcome and liked her team’s performance in other phases of the game.
“Our defense was on tonight and I was very pleased,” she said. “Now, we just have to consistently attack the ball at the net. Our serving was very good tonight and we gave Harrison some problems.”
Sandra Skinner paced the Lady¿Cards with 19 kills, while Maddie Hamlin had eight. Sydney Wright added six, followed by Darion Marzetti with four. Kyndal Curry and Carrie Irvin combined for five kills.
Curry had eight aces and Amy Kao contributed with three. Irvin, Hamlin and Marzetti had two each and Veronica Worsham and Cori Miller chipped in with one each.
Irvin had 33 set assists, while Kao had 28 serve and receive passes. Kao also paced Clark with 32 digs, while Kaylee Raymer added three.
The junior varsity squad defeated Harrison County in two games.
Boys soccer
The George Rogers Clark boys soccer team handed coach Ian Collins his first victory as coach of the Cardinals with a 3-1 victory over Lexington¿Christian Tuesday night in Lexington.
Logan Blankenship paced the team’s offense with two goals, while Wilson Martin chipped in with one. Irvin Juarez and Andrew Haggard each provided the assists on two of Clark’s three goals in the contest.
“It’s a starting point,” Collins said. “We have a lot to learn, but we played much better in the second half. (It’s) back to work tomorrow.”
Blankenship said Clark opened in a frenzy, followed by a slide midway through the game and finished on a strong note.
“We started really well,” he said. “We let down a little in the middle (of the game) and picked it back up to finish strong.”
The junior varsity team lost 2-1 in a game that was suspended because of a weather delay.
Mason Hatton scored the team’s lone goal on an assist from teammate Jose Villa.
