George Rogers Clark gave everything it had against rival Montgomery County, but came up short in a 3-2 loss to the Lady Indians Thursday in Mount Sterling.
Montgomery County scored a run in the sixth inning that broke a 2-2 deadlock for the final margin. Clark scored a run in the first and tacked on another score in the fourth, but the Lady Indians responded each time to hold off the Lady Cards.
Clark third baseman Kolbi Mitchell paced the Lady Cards with two of their three hits. Mitchell laced a run-scoring double in the first inning and connected on a solo home run in the fourth inning to complete Clark’s scoring. Lady Cards senior Rebecca Strange laced a double in the seventh inning.
Clark pitcher Whitney Conkwright went the distance and collected a pair of strikeouts and walked just one batter. Conkwright gave up all three runs, two of which were earned.

Baseball

The George Rogers Clark baseball team avenged an 8-6 loss to Powell County earlier this season with a 1-0 shutout of the Pirates Thursday in Stanton.
The victory was the third in a row for Clark, which opened the season with seven consecutive losses. The Cards defeated Estill County last Saturday, followed by a 14-2 rout of Paris earlier this week.
During the three-game winning streak, the Cardinals have outscored their opponents 20-2.
Pokey Harris, Logan McQuerry, Brent Stoneking and Luke Sharrock each had a hit for Clark.
Derek McKenzie tossed a three-hitter and had five strikeouts for Clark.

Tennis

The George Rogers Clark boys tennis team suffered a 3-2 loss at Montgomery County Thursday.
In singles, Cameron Colvard defeated Max Baker (6-2, 6-2) and Ian Rowe beat Clint Bryant by the same score.
In doubles, Ben Manning and Forest Thornberry beat John Rupard and Christian Colvard (6-0, 6-2). Sam Hodson and Matt Razor beat Brooks Harrison and Troy True (6-2, 6-2) and Conner Danis and Will Razor beat Mark Thomas and Irvin Juarez (7-6, 6-0).
On the girls side, Clark’s top player, Makenzie Waltermire lost 6-1 and 6-4 and the doubles team of Kayla Harrison and Brooke Powell also lost, 8-2. Joanna Guerrant and Samantha Ball suffered an 8-4 setback.

Cross Country

The George Rogers Clark track team competed in three meets during spring break last week.
The team opened with a meet in Louisville at Central High School. Senior Andrew Ping broke the school triple jump record with a jump of 41-feet and one inch.
Alex White placed sixth in the 3200-meters with a time of 10:09.77, while Clay Dixon placed fourth in the 800-meter run with a finish of 2:02.11.
In the girls competition, Sandra Skinner placed fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 31 feet 6.5 inches.
At Harrison County, Ashley Taulbee participated in the 200-meter with a time of 31.40. Alyssa Gaunce competed in the 1600-meters, running the distance in a time of 7:17.3. Genna Petrey placed third in the high jump. Ariel Wortham competed in the 100-meter dash.
Also in the Harrison County meet, Clay Dixon and Andrew Walker took first and second respectively in the 400-meters. Ben Petrey led the team in the 800 meter-dash with a time of 2:23.50. White placed first in the 1600-meters with a 4:55.10. Elijah Israel competed in the 100-meters, while Brandon Burris and Nate Dent competed in the hurdle events.
The Cardinals completed their set of three meets in London at North Laurel.
Andrew Walker placed second in the 400-meters with a time of 54.04. Clay Dixon placed second in the 800-meter with a time of 2:05.52, while White placed second in the 3200-meters with a time of 10:13.04. Ping placed third in both the long and triple jump.
Matt Daugherty placed third in the shot with a throw of 41 feet 6 inches, followed by teammate Taylor Goldhaun.
