Prep Roundup: Lady Cards double up score on Grant County
The George Rogers Clark girls soccer team put together its best performance of the season in a 4-2 win at Grant County Monday night.
“Honestly, this is the best I’d seen us play yet,” Clark coach Jessica Laswell said. “We passed the ball really well, had some great headers and made pretty decent runs in and around the box.”
Laswell also was pleased with her team’s defensive adjustments, especially in the second half. Molly Pelfrey scored both goals for Grant County in the opening half, but was held scoreless during the final frame.
“(She) gave us some trouble,” Laswell said of Pelfrey. “But our defense worked it out and then we helped them out on the offensive side by finishing some of our opportunities and creating even more. Their goalie had to make quite a few great saves to keep us out more than we were. If we can continue to improve from here and keep this momentum, I don't see why we can’t defend our title as region champs.”
Brooke Cantrell and Courtney White each had a goal for Clark in the opening half. Cantrell’s score at 1:44 came on an assist from Hayley Thornberry, while White’s goal at 21:15 tied the score at 2-2 at the break. Pelfrey scored both goals for the Braves at 2:40 and 27:40.
Brittany McClure gave the Lady Cards the lead for good on her score at 47:43, while Cora Kerber completed the scoring with a goal at 60:30. Overall,¿Clark had 13 shots on goal, while Cathryn Banker had five saves in goal.
The junior varsity team settled for a 0-0 tie. McClure collected four saves for the Lady Cards.
