It took two overtimes and a shootout to settle the 39th District championship.
Montgomery County made four of five shots on goal in the shootout to defeat George Rogers Clark 1-0 at Stonerside Field in Paris. Clark made three shots and couldn’t match the Indians’ final tally.
“It was a tough way to lose,” Clark coach Ian Collins said. “We have to bounce back on Tuesday.”
Both teams advance to next week’s 10th Region Tournament at Harrison County. The Thorobreds captured the 38th District title with a 2-1 triumph over Pendleton County Thursday. Clark edged Harrison 1-0 in an earlier-season meeting on Sept. 18 at the Cardinal Soccer Complex. The game is set for 7:15 p.m. Tuesday in Cynthiana.
Wilson Martin, Dalton Gallenstein and Irvin Juarez each connected for Clark in the shootout. During regulation and the two overtime periods, the Cardinals managed just one shot on goal.
Clark’s Logan Blankenship and a Montgomery County player received a red card prior to the half and both teams had to finish with 10 players.
Connor Blankenship collected five saves, while Chandler Gaunce took over the goal keeper slot in the shootout.
Conner Blankenship and Irvin Juarez were named to the all-tournament team.

Region opens next week
