George Rogers Clark girls soccer coach Jessica Laswell liked the way her team opened the season Tuesday night.
Although the Lady Cardinals dropped a 2-1 setback to Lafayette in the opening round of the iHigh Frenzy at Lafayette, Laswell was pleased with her team’s performance.
“I was impressed with the girls’ movement,” she said. “Our spacing looked better and we’re starting to get better at communicating, but we’ve still got a ways to go with that. We created a lot of opportunities up top, which was much improved, we just need to capitalize on them.”
Courtney White scored Clark’s first goal at 37:22 on an assist from teammate Catie Curren.
Lafayette connected on the decisive goal at the 48:33 mark, while Lady Generals’ goal keeper Kate Heinonen blocked a penalty kick by Clark senior Hayley Thornberry following a handball call in the box.
“The second of their goals was a simple miscommunication on our part, which is easy to fix,” Laswell said. “The more we get used to playing with each other the better we're going to get. This team shows lots of potential."
Next game: 6:15 today, vs. Lexington Christian at Lafayette.
