The George Rogers Clark girls soccer team is one step away from a repeat.
The Lady Cardinals advanced to the finals of the 39th District Tournament with a 10-0 shutout of Paris in the opening round of the two-day tournament Monday at Stonerside Field in Paris.
Clark will take on Montgomery County in the finals set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Paris. The Lady Indians earned a spot in the finals with an exciting 1-0 victory over host Bourbon¿County in overtime in the second game of a first-round doubleheader. Both teams will advance to next week’s 10th Region Tournament.
The Lady¿Cards, defending district and region champion, edged the Lady Indians 3-2 in a contest that ended with penalty kicks on Sept. 24 in Mount Sterling. Clark coach Jessica Laswell said her team is excited to be back in the district finals.
“We are definitely looking forward to defending our title as district champs,” she said. “It will prove to be a good game and Montgomery has some dangerous speed up top. I am hoping we'll play to our full potential, though, and prove to be the better team for another year.”
In the opening round, the Lady Cards (8-10) set the tone with four goals in the first four minutes against the Lady Hounds.
Courtney White started the scoring with a goal 39 seconds into the game and collected another score during the contest. Cora Kerber booted in a goal at 1:23 and rounded out Clark’s scoring with another score at 62:12.
The rout gave Laswell a chance to play her reserves, with eight players entering the scoring column.
In addition to the two goals each by White and Kerber, Jillian Gallenstein, Brooke Cantrell, Catie Curren, Ashton Wasson, Bray Barnett and Felicia Pasley each had a goal for the Lady Cards, who had 23 shots on goal. Goal keepers Cathryn Banker and Chassidy Keeton split time in goal in the shutout victory.
“The win was a good one,” Laswell said. “It’s always good to get some younger players the experience of playing in the post season. Practice and traveling are always beneficial for them but when they can play, it is great motivation.”
